Blocked Fallopian Tubes & Infertility

By

Unless a woman has a history of trauma to her lower abdomen or has a history of STD’s and Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, I’m a little more hesitant to accept that the tubes are blocked despite the HSG saying that they are blocked. I’m not saying that they can’t be blocked, I’m just more hesitant to accept that they are. Why? The truth of the matter is that I have had patients that have had HSG tests done which showed blocked tubes, but when they were examined again during a laparoscopy, their tubes were just fine. The reason for this being that muscle tension and stress can close the fallopian tubes during an HSG exam (which can be stressful). Furthermore, many women can experience pain, cramping during the HSG exam making the likely hood of muscle tension even more. Add to that an injection of a foreign dye into the body which the body does not know or like, it becomes very feasible that the HSG exam can in of itself cause the tubes to be blocked.

Having said that, if there is extreme scarring or damage to the fallopian tubes, Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine can offer limited benefit to resolve this problem. Western Medicine will address this issue with microsurgery or IVF by bypassing the tubes all together. Since Pelvic Inflammatory Disease is the main reason for damage to the fallopian tubes, it is imperative to get treated early for PID.
