Late Periods & Infertility

Late periods or cycles is defined as 3 consecutive months of cycles greater than 30 days in Chinese Medicine.  The cycle may be up to 40-60 days long.  There are a few reasons why a woman may experience late periods.  First, it can be due to poor hormone (esp. estrogen or thyroid) production in the body.  Because estrogen along with FSH help with follicle development, if these hormones are not at an optimal level, that will cause slow follicle development.  Next, late periods can be due to a lack of yang energy in the body.  Yang energy transforms and promotes ovulation.  These women may feel cold easily, low libido and low back pain.  So the body keeps trying to ovulate but it can’t because it doesn’t have enough warmth in the body to trigger ovulation.  Finally, late periods can occur because of stress.  Stress will diminish the hormone output of the body delaying ovulation.  Many women under constant stress may notice that their cycles will be late.  Chinese Medicine addresses all of the following very effectively!

    Dear Sir / Madam,

My girlfriend has told me she is two weeks late on her period. Following only one occasion where we had unprotected sex, this has concerned us both as to whether she maybe pregnant or not. I understand a number of reasons why a woman maybe late with her period, however, can you advice as to what our next steps should be & when they should be taken? We would like to establish whether she maybe pregnant or not? We are in a serious relationship, however, we both, at present, do not want children. I thank you for your time.
