Irregular Menstrual Cycles & Infertility

By

First, it must be understood that in a given year, a woman should ovulate 12-13 times if her cycles are 28-30 days long. Irregular menstrual cycles can decrease the number of ovulations in a given year therefore decreasing your chances of conception. So having regular cycles @ 28-30 day cycles will maximize your chances of conception. Irregular menstrual cycles can occur for various reasons. Luteal phase defect, PCOS, hypothyroidism and elevated prolactin levels are just some of the reasons why a woman may experience irregular cycles. A delay in ovulation can also occur because it takes longer for estrogen levels to reach a threshold. So the body will take longer to actually ovulate since it doesn’t have the estrogen levels to cause a transformation (ovulation) to occur. In Chinese Medicine, we say that the body is lacking the necessary yin/blood to promote ovulation. These women may notice that they have little to none cervical fluid and light or scanty periods. The other reason why ovulation could be delayed is due to a lack of yang energy in the body. Yang energy transforms and promotes ovulation. These women may feel cold easily, low libido and low back pain. Many women can have a combination of the above mentioned. Ultimately, we would only know the cause of why a woman is experiencing irregular cycles after a full Chinese Medicine consultation. Acupuncture & Herbs will help regulate the cycle by decreasing stress, supplementing the yin/blood and enhancing the yang.
