Acupuncture and IVF/IUI

Studies show that Acupuncture can improve success rates of IVF up to 40%.  In fact, more and more Fertility Clinics are working with Acupuncture clinics or hiring Acupuncturists in their clinic because they know the success of using Acupuncture with ART (Assisted Reproductive Technology).  I have personally seen how Acupuncture and Chinese Herbs have been helpful in increasing the number of follicles and eggs during retrieval.  Many women who just were not producing enough follicles and quality eggs can see improvement with Acupuncture and Chinese Herbs.  Often times, 3-6 months before a woman starts her regimen of drugs is ideal to do Acupuncture & Chinese Herbs.  The goal of treatment should be to boost hormone levels and relax the body/uterus to promote circulation/blood flow to the uterus and allow for easy implantation when the time comes.  Treatment is also recommended once the drug regimen begins until transfer actually occurs.  IVF should be a last resort.  I think it’s great that we have an alternative when things just can’t happen on their own.  There are special cases when IVF can be taken advantage of like blocked tubes and no/low sperm count.  It may also be advantageous for older women as well.  However, generally speaking nature has it’s own built in protection mechanism, and if we try to override that, we may be asking for trouble.  So to sum things up, Acupuncture & Chinese Herbs are especially good at increasing follicle development egg quality/yield.  It also can benefit the uterus allowing for easier implantation by relaxing the uterus.
