“Post Pill” Amenorrhea, why can’t I have a period after getting off the pill?

Although many women can get their period after stopping the pill, a small percentage do experience what is now called post pill amenorrhea.  This diagnosis is based on the lack of a period for 6 months or longer after stopping birth control pills.  Most women have no idea that this can happen and most doctors and pharmaceutical company’s would not want you to know as that would be bad for business.  However, it must be understood that taking birth control pills is basically a voluntary chemical castration.  You see birth control pills suppress your natural pituitary function.  Birth control pills are full of synthetic hormones compromising of estrogen and progesterone.  This raises the hormones levels in your bloodstream sending a signal to your pituitary NOT to work since you have enough of it in your blood already.  The longer you’ve been on birth control pills the more likely your system gets used to not functioning on it’s own, and will not restart even after you stop taking the pill.  Basically, the pill can shut down your endocrine (hormone) system.

Western Medicine fixes this condition often times with Clomid.  Clomid is an ovulatory stimulant.  It can have side effects, but Clomid does promote ovulation and can help promote conception.  However, Clomid does not treat the underlying hormone deficiency that has developed from the use of birth control pills.  It’s like trying to give yourself a boost of energy with coffee when your fatigued.  It will give you a temporary lift, but the fatigue is still there.  So although a woman can get pregnant with a quick fix of Clomid, it can be taxing on her body because her body would not do it on it’s own.

Acupuncture & Chinese Herbs can be especially good at helping a woman naturally regain her normal cycle.  It can take some time (3-6 months) because we have to build the hormone in the body, but success is high.  Reducing stress and eating a hormone rich diet will help.  Look under the Diet and Fertility section of this website to learn more.
